Say goodbye to annoying Pop up
Online advertisements are either pop up or banners that offer online users product or services. Over the years since internet was first introduced, pop up and banner advertisements have flooded almost all websites in the internet. Though some advertisements are legitimate and offering real products, there are ads that contain virus and spyware. Virus can destroy computer hardware while spyware steals identity to gain unauthorized access on users account and billing information.
Latest survey shows that online advertising is greatly affecting user’s online experience. Before pop up ads were introduced, banner ads were making enough money to support websites. However, when click through rate decreased, vendors started thinking about new means in promoting their products using more advance technology, thus pop up ads were born and then the floating ads.
There are four major kinds of online advertisements. These are the following:
1. Pop up ads– These are the most popular online ads today. They are smaller windows that come up when visiting particular websites enticing online users to buy products or services. They have the highest click rate (14,000/day) compare to any other online advertisements.
2. Banner ads – These are usually positioned on top of the screen. Considered the more subtle approach to online ads.
3. Tower ads – Advertisements that appear on the side of the screen, unlike pop up ads, they do not usually block the page being viewed by the user.
4. Floating ads – considered the latest kind of ad to hit the internet. They use animation and run full-page billboards and commercials. They combine the elements of web banner and pop up. This is the response of vendors against popular pop up blockers. Because these ads are sophistically created, they cannot be blocked.
Fortunately, there are many software programs designed to fight pop ups and other unwanted advertising scheme in the internet for free. These are the following:
1. Open opera – The first browser to offer blocking tools against pop up.
2. Mozilla – Pioneered in blocking pop ups that are generated when loading a page.
3. Window XP SP2 – Supplemented pop up blocker in 2004 to Internet Explorer.
There are also popup blockers that are available for a fee. Examples are Pop up eliminator, Zeroads, Bash-A-Pop, etc.
Effective ways to avoid pop up and other online advertisements
1. Ad-blocking software – installing this software may not guarantee removal of online advertisements completely (specifically floating ads) but it will surely lessen them up to 90%.
2. Install computer protection such as firewall, Virus scan and anti-spyware. These can protect your computer from viruses, identity theft and frequent disconnection.
3. Choose your search engine. Google helps user in not only searching information online but it also helps user minimize annoying ads. Its one of the few search engines that sells text-only advertisement, meaning, no pop up!
4. Set your browser security settings – This will stop Activex from installing automatically.
5. Block unwanted websites – when doing so, it is highly recommended to use HOSTS file.
6. Constantly update the version of the browser – Usually includes the most advanced technology in online security.
Online users generally do not like online advertisements and do not appreciate getting pop up about mortgage when they are living in an apartment or about Viagra when they are on their teens. Online advertisements are annoying and unwanted, knowing and having an access to block them can definitely enhance online experience.
