The Importance of Having a Windows Registry Back Up for Your Own Security
Backing up a registry is an absolute must, because one never knows what the future might bring. Tomorrow might be the day one's computer comes crashing down and gets completely wiped out. It's not a pretty scenario, but it happens!
In other cases, maybe its owner just might decide to make some major alterations in the registry, and later decide that it was a big error in judgment.
This is the time where you should be able to turn to your old reliable back up registry. Given of course, that you actually took the time to make a back up!
Registry
Basically what a registry is is a record of all the information of all programs, settings of the operating system, and all the user options regarding his/her computer. This is why it is important to make a copy of the original version of the registry. Because this is the one that the user can restore just in case the current registry fails, or have just undergone too many modifications that the current settings are not beneficial to the user anymore.
Now it is important to note that backing up the registry is only good with Windows 95 and 98. Windows 2000 and Windows XP, require special software to effectively back up their registries.
You can back up the whole registry or portions of it, since it is divided into Keys. Each key contains various information that is a part of the registry.
How to back up the registry for Windows 98
1. Press the start menu on Windows and then click run
2. Type the following into the command prompt: "scanregw", then press enter.
3. This will automatically run the Microsoft registry checker. This analyzes their registry and checks it for any errors. It will then inquire if you would like to back up the registry.
4. Click yes. This will make Windows automatically back up the current registry for you. This completes the backing up process of your registry.
Editing Registry
When something is wrong with the configuration of your PC you can just go directly to the registry to edit it. Cleaning up leftovers from old programs that have been deleted can also be done directly through the registry.
There are programs that can be used such as Tweak UI, to make editing much more easier. The great thing about this is that it furnished with an interface that makes editing easier and more efficient.
If you do not have this program, you can just use the registry editor that comes with Windows. This will allow you to see and edit the information contained in the registry.
Backing up the registry is as easy as: one, two, three! But the benefits of taking the time to do this simple task is enormous!
This is why everyone should make a back up of their registry, so they would not be sorry, when some unexpected catastrophe befalls their beloved PC. This way they can rest on the thought that they could always restore their registry, if all else fails!
