3 Bad Habits that are Damaging for Website Security

They said it could not be cracked.

Cartes Bancaires, a group of 176 French financial institutions, invested years of effort and piles of cash to create an unbreakable “smart” card system. The cards, distributed to bank patrons, are secured by a tiny computer chip.

“Unlike dumb magnetic strips, which are easily duplicated and mass-produced by counterfeiters, the smart card’s embedded chip cannot be inexpensively cloned,” Cartes Bancaires officials said. Moreover, the cards use digital signatures to electronically validate the cardholder every time the card is used.

To cut the story short, their claims where all bogus. It was on January 2000, when a certain programmer was able to use a fake smart card and was able to buy himself “ten train tickets.”

From then on, many fraudulent activities followed, victimizing innocent people and hoarding their hard-earned money just for commercial advantages.

If organizations like Cartes Baincares, the big credit card companies, and other institutions that employ the most innovative security measures cannot protect their corporate jewels from hackers, crackers, crooks, and schnooks, how in the world can you?

Rest assured you could. It turns out that securing your PC is such an insignificant task compared to locking down huge web servers such as those mentioned. It is even easier than securing your home, car, or office.

The only thing you just have to do is to get rid of those bad habits that you are accustomed of in order to provide the best security for yourself and for your PC. Best of all, if you already know the things that you should not be doing while visiting a website, it would be easier for you to protect your PC.

Security Check

Although the Internet is a fun place to travel and explore, you really must be careful about where you travel, whom you interact with, and what you leave behind. Your greatest protection is your preparation and setup.

Hence, it is important to customize your web browser so that it can detect website security. In this way, you can be assured that the website you are browsing is safe and reliable.

To be more adept with website security and web browser security, here are 5 bad habits that you should avoid doing. Otherwise, you will be compromising your personal information as well as your finances.

1. Taking password creation for granted

When choosing a password, take care to use something singularly unique that you and you alone will know. Never use your last name, your initials, your kid’s or spouse’s name, sporting teams, rock bands, birthdays, nicknames, and so on. Do not even use the term “password” as your password.

You may not be aware of it but surveys show that the word “password’ is, in fact, the most commonly used password. All of these are easily exploited by the so-called “brute-force attacks.” They are the first passwords that the spies type in when they are trying to break into your PC.

2. Not checking on website security

Website security reflects upon how a certain website employs “secure connections” so that the person who is visiting the site can confidently reveal sensitive informations without compromising their safety.

The problem with most people who browse the Net is that they disregard the security signs being displayed by a particular website. Hence, they become vulnerable to fraudulent activities such as identity theft.

It is so easy to check on website security, so it is not an excuse not to do it every time an individual visits a particular website.

3. Disregarding “http” and “https’

Most people are not even aware what “http” means. Hence, whenever they encounter “https,” they are amazed what that “s’ means.

If you know anything about website security, you will know that a website that has “https,” you know that the website has secure connections. So, next time, be attentive on the website address.

These are just some of the many bad habits people make that compromise their security online. Hence, it is best to eliminate those things in order to understand website security and how it can help them stay secured while browsing online.

Just keep in mind that no computer is 100% safe from viral infections, security breaches, theft, and data spying. It is up to you and your habits to adopt and apply the proper security measures to protect your PC and its data.
